True, but once that mass is reached it keeps on rolling.
The Dutch Users forum (http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewforum.php?id=12) is a very lively group of people that are very concerned with the art of better map making. Doing the same thing in a mailing list is much harder. 
And it is much easier to follow discussions and reply to/engage in, than in the mailinglist with its endless repeats and quotes of previous statements.
