[Osmf-talk] Anonymous Membership for OSMF

Not the board, but given that I was heavily involved in actually
implementing the associate membership scheme, I suppose I can comment.
The main reason for the associate membership was to circumvent the
requirement to make full personal information available of the members
to all comers on request (that is address, when they were members and
so, essentially for ever). The associate membership clearly solves this
issue.
At the time we had a longish discussion on what information we should
request and store for the associate members internally and while I'm not
totally sure, I think the conclusion was that we would at least store
e-mail and OSM display name.
Now while in principle that would allow more or less to become a member
with a pseudonym, there are only a limited set of ways to pay the
membership fees anonymously and for all other, non-anonymous, payment
methods you are going to run afoul of legal record keeping requirements
in any case. As a result I don't think this is a big issue, as long as
this remain confidential OSMF information (because as pointed out above
the register of associate members is not available for public inspection).

PS: naturally the argument that the new CRM system requires real names
is ridiculous given that you can easily generate a pseudonym from the
OSM displayname
