I think you're doing the EU considerable injustice with such sweeping
statements. For example, the GDPR regulations are certainly *not*
something that supports business in any way, but something that
strengthens the rights of citizens. But perhaps we should avoid getting
into an "is the EU generally good" debate, I imagine it could drag on
for a while.

In this particular copyright debate, I was surprised that there were
lots of grassroots people on the "other side" as well - small-time
musicians or writers who felt that they were getting a raw deal. I think
they were wrong, and that trying to help publishers make money off
content is a bit like Mr Trump wanting to push the coal industry - you
wonder if businesses shouldn't be given an incentive to look forward
rather than cement yesteryear's business models.

Anyway, I would have hoped for a different outcome but I have a
sportsmanlike attitude towards this - we played (fsvo "play"), we lost,
but there will be other matches - as you rightly say, each country will
now have to enact national laws, and this is certainly a process that
can be influenced on the national level.

The big question is of course, what will the UK do - my guess would be
that in order to guarantee a frictionless exchange of goods and
services, they will continue to subscribe to EU copyright rules. But who
knows.

Bye
Frederik
