Right now, anyone can join the OSMF for a payment of £15, and zero days
mapping. So that membership requirement has already been, as you describe,
dropped. It seems to me that reducing the mapping requirement helps to
close the accessibility gap. Paying £15 is trivial for many people in more
affluent parts of the world. So essentially today, if you are economically
advantaged, the barrier to entry is low. If paying £15 is
cost-prohibitive, you have to map for a significant period of time, which
is more of a burden to those people than paying £15 likely is to you or I.
Reducing the mapping requirement helps to lower the barrier for less
economically advantaged people to something that more closely approaches
the monetary barrier for more affluent folks.
