In the case of my friend: probably via the car licence plate number. I personally always introduce myself by name and place of residence.

Even with a photo etc., the flyer can lead to the same reaction "anyone can print that out".

It is not a substitute for an official membership card.

If you live at places like this then always download the document, add your name and OSM account URL bold (maybe your email address as well) in the middle and a small black & white photo in a corner before printing it out. If you are a regular mapper in an area, print sheets where that area is highlighted on a map (perhaps the back side of the flyer) with a note that you are the local maintainer of the map. Otherwise you could similarly draw a GPX path overlay of your next trip (for example if you are doing a mapping party or a longer journey around new neighborhoods). I wish you could download something like this generated from osm.org <http://osm.org> directly.

But also, how did the police know where to find you? What did you tell them?

It is not illegal to be mapping in most countries. However, that taking photographs of people and private property is actually not unrestricted in most countries.

I was out surveying and photographed a newly built house from the street. The owner noticed it and confronted me. I explained OSM and handed over the flyer. This was not accepted - "anyone can print that out" - and demanded something official.

The owner was very angry and threatened to file charges. Further attempts to explain only made the situation worse. I stopped the discussion and drove home.

An hour later, the police called.

For me, it's about building trust.

An official membership card that you can't buy seems to me the most appropriate.

Hello,

I think this might be a good idea but I think the first step would be to get it for the people to print themselves.
One could Call it a beta test of sorts.

I think that it should not be bundled in by default -- maybe a higher tier membership (fee) would get it? Or maybe you could write a message asking for one?

I would love to have an OSMF card and yet I think we should start small and slow.
What do you think about it?

Kind regards

Phillip

Happy Day! I have just renewed my membership as an ordinary OSMF member and a wish, an idea has come to my mind. As a craft mapper, I am sometimes asked suspicious questions. To break the ice, the first thing I do is introduce myself. To support this, I have often wished for an OSM-related business card. Wouldn't it be a nice gesture to give all members a professionally designed, personalised business card as a small thank you after they have paid their membership fee? I would also understand an increase in the membership fee :-) Regards, Robert _______________________________________________ osmf-talk mailing list osmf-talk at openstreetmap.org <mailto:osmf-talk at openstreetmap.org> https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/osmf-talk
