I disagree with your -1 on not removing the headings. As mentioned the page should be short enough to not need headings and the images leave you with no doubt as to what the text is about. Removing all headings except "About OpenStreetMap", "Start Contributing" and "No time to edit? Add a note!" in my opinion focuses the page on what this welcome article is about (i.e. What is OSM, and please contribute). It also makes it easier to jump to the contribute section.
If you have not yet done so, I encourage you to give it a go and see what you think. If you have, then I guess we just differ on opinions :-)
+1 For not calling it a "wiki map" (although in the absence of a better word, I don't see "wiki" as dated).
p.s. There is a lot of use of the word "Place" early on. Are we clear that we don't mean a geographical "place" in this context? How well does this translate?
