Just because it "looks nice" or many people use it, does not give you the right to violate the privacy of those who have decided to not use gravatar.
This id not about using a "open and popular alternative" but about leaking private information. Overall imho OSM does a pretty good job at protecting the private information of its users, but there are a few places that still need improvements to be able to protect all its users private information.
