Also, what's the point of testing the email address on registering, when it can be easily abandoned 5 minutes after that (re: mailinator)? We don't send any vital information to it. The best way to ensure email validity is to provide a user with a reason they should give a correct email, not by performing checks that can be easily circumvented.

Sending an email to the entered address serves only as a way of validation that the user has not made any typos when entering it. When you get a similarly validated email from a third-party service, there is no need to validate it again, since it was done before.
