If a CPU side software rendering path were a practical solution, I'd expect that such rather niche browsers such as LibreWolf to provide one transparently.
In the end, if compatability with web standards is a goal, you should adhere to them.
Since they don't, showing an error that this does not work is a good solution in my book.
You can still enable this for the website I assume, so no biggie.
