[Sotm-asia] Let's re-start discussion about SotM Asia!!

Hi all,

Just a few thoughts on SotM-Asia, because I had a chance to talk about this
with Venka yesterday.

I think right now we talk about three options:

   - Indonesia (Jakarta)
   - Philippines (Manila)
   - Thailand (Bangkok)

We have not talked about any "call for venue" procedure, but there is not
much time left until December or January.
It's obvious that there is a strong interest to have SotM-Asia, which is a)
affordable for people from Asian countries and b) in a country where Visa
applications are not a nightmare for many.

For this first SotM-Asia the time for planning and organization would be
very limited, and to me it seems that in Thailand a rough concept, an
interesting venue and idea for SotM already exists.
Also there is another strong argument in my opinion for Thailand in case we
combine SotM Asia with FOSS4G Asia: we could celebrate 10 years FOSS4G
anniversary then in the country where the first FOSS4G was held.

Looking at who is interested to organize SotM-Asia, most of us are involved
in OSM and also OSGeo. So I don't expect anybody would be against a
combined FOSS4G/SotM event.
Making a combined event also doesn't force people with a smaller budget to
choose between either SotM or FOSS4G. This year in UK the situation is very
unfortunate with a rather long break between both events. How does someone
from Philippines want to explain a EU immigration officer that he needs a
Visa for almost 4 weeks? To afford such a long stay or explain to your
employer is another question.

So I would propose to make a rather quick and pragmatic decision, that the
local team can get started as soon as possible.
And it would be great to already be able to announce the 2nd SotM-Asia in
December/January, so why not already think about the next years and try to
start planning early.
Maybe we can join efforts this year to get some tools in place that
simplify planning and organizing of future events. I want to avoid that a
local team needs to almost start from scratch every year.
