It is a type of crane. The US Patent office, marine classification
societies, industrial suppliers, etc. and others classify 'shiplifts'
under cranes ... "

I worked in a shipyard as a welder / fitter and later contracted to
mega-yacht builders. Shiplifts are run by operating engineers / crane
operators, their systems are maintained by crane mechanics, and their parts
are crane parts.
If there is an easy distinction between 'lifts' and 'elevators' is that
'lifts' have the ability to vary their position ( by rails, floating, air
bearings, whatever ) and have individual controls on the mechanisms to
accommodate variable load distributions, where elevators are more or less
fixed and horizontally constrained along their travel path.
There is a colloquial British use where lift is synonymous with office
building elevator, but if it's in a marine context, it's a crane.
