a shopping mall entity shop=mall can just as much get a building tag as any other tag: I would not do it. In any case there isn’t necessarily a 1:1 relation between shopping malls and buildings (a mall could also consist of several buildings for example).

You can find a lot of shortcut tagging in the db, e.g. amenity= and barrier=fence on the same object, or building and features in the building on the same object. People are doing it as a shortcut, and it can often be interpreted which properties belong to which thing, but if you arrive at wikidata=q123;q456 you know you better should split things up (some people at this point do foo:wikidata and bar:wikidata, wouldn’t recommend this either, it is removing the ambiguity, but it will likely not be parsed and understood automatically and it is against the KISS principle)

The wiki articles may be inconsistent from time to time, they are mostly helpful for understanding the tagging, but the wiki is also “full” of underspecified and sometimes inconsistent information. Everybody can edit (nearly) everything.
