there’s also modest use of highway=virtual

but footway=link beats it by factor 10. Did you check how it is used?

I believe we can already map the situation you are describing where a sidewalk ends:

split at the kerb, connect to the street highway (this is always done, the last part of a footway connecting to a street is always virtual).
Add footway=sidewalk to the sidewalk and footway=crossing to the part on the road. Tag the crossing node with highway=crossing and crossing=unmarked
