I agree that this approach would be preferrable, but most petrol stations
are only mapped as nodes (62%), and while compressed air is not very
frequently mapped yet (8900 as a property and 6300 on their own, of which
200 with nonstandard keys), most of it is mapped as a property. The main
problem to overcome is mappers thinking about a POI as a node, while in
many cases it would be better to use polygons, especially if things inside
them are mapped.
