I think I agree with Zeke on this. It seems the issue is that *ford=** has
become a generic term for any water crossing that is not *bridge=** or
*tunnel=**. Creating a more generic tag like *water=crossing* seems to be
the optimal solution to this issue and it would allow easy extension of the
values to include a wide range of water crossing types.
Additionally, I don't agree that ford=boat or water_crossing=boat is the
same as a ferry. With ferry I would assume there is an established ferry
service that can take me across, but with water_crossing=boat I would
expect to have to bring my own boat with me. Although, not sure what the
differencec between water_crossing=swim and water_crossing=boat would be.
In conclusion, introduce a better tag with more specific values and assume
that ford=yes is just a temporary generic tag (as it is actually used now).
