Driverless is only a small part of the equation. You then have (in the best case) a GPX file on your harddrive. With this alone you can't do much. You still have to open it in JOSM to edit it, etc.  This means you still have to install additional software. A driver install is the easiest part, IMHO.

I understand that there are some uses for driverless trackers. But these are limited (have someone walk around and upload the logs to someone for further processing). I'm not sure this is getting the most out of the investment.

Still, if someone finds reasonably affordable units that also meet the other criteria, I'm all for it.
