[OSM-talk-be] welcoming new mappers

Hi Joost,

Really nice that new mappers are given a warm welcome on OSM (thanks Jakka for all the hours you put in!!).

Indeed not easy to give the most important tips in a short text, as it all depends on what someone wants to map. I think the current selection is a good one. I have some minor suggestions about the wording:

  *   editors → editing tools (to avoid confusion between people and software)
  *   highways → roads (and/or explain that we use the key “highway” for all roads, although beginning mappers often won’t see the actual key/value pairs)
  *   newbies → new mappers (or am I too politically correct here?)

About the wiki page for ‘new mappers’ :-) → I think it’s good to list common pitfalls for beginning mappers, but we should try to avoid repeating too much of the information that is already in the wiki. It would be good to make that information is easier to find (e.g. through the new mappers page) and make the existing information itself also ‘beginner friendly’.

As you may be aware, we have been sending new mappers in Belgium a welcome message for many years. In the first place: thank you Jakka for sending almost all of them, and thank you m!dgard for building the tool.

That tool has been rebuilt now by Jonathan Beliën - and it is now going global! Have a look at https://welcome.osm.be/ for the countries and regions that have already joined over the past few weeks.

Because of the re-launch, I was looking at the welcome message itself and I thought I'd bring it up to date.

What do you think? I'm especially interested in what would be the most important tips to give new mappers. There are waaaay too much to add ALL of them to the message itself, so the link also contains a draft for a wiki page with more hints and info for new mappers in Belgium. Feel free to make the long list longer, and give suggestions for what should definitely be in the message itself.

I would like to finish the English version first; afterwards we'll translate to NL and FR.

Wat vindt u ervan? Ik ben vooral geïnteresseerd in wat de belangrijkste tips zouden zijn om nieuwe mappers te geven. Er zijn er veel te veel om ze allemaal in het bericht zelf te zetten, dus de link bevat ook een ontwerp voor een wiki pagina met meer hints en info voor nieuwe mappers in België. Voel je vrij om de lange lijst langer te maken, en suggesties te geven voor wat zeker in het bericht zelf moet staan.

Ik zou graag eerst de Engelse versie afwerken; daarna zullen we vertalen naar NL en FR.

Qu'en pensez-vous ? Je suis particulièrement intéressé par les conseils les plus importants à donner aux nouveaux mappeurs. Il y en a beaucoup trop pour tous les ajouter dans le message lui-même, donc le lien contient également un projet de page wiki avec plus de conseils et d'informations pour les nouveaux mappeurs en Belgique. N'hésitez pas à allonger cette longue liste et à faire des suggestions sur ce qui devrait absolument figurer dans le message lui-même.

J'aimerais terminer la version anglaise en premier ; ensuite nous traduirons en NL et FR.
