Thanks, I forwarded this to Richard and the talk-ca list,
I'm laughing, because we got everything from Amusement Park to... Zoo, and
everything in between. :-)
The pdf chart has TONNES of detail, and is what i was hoping for. (a
homework assignment for everyone? To at least skim it, and try to understand
it :)
>From my wild guessing it looks like GeoBase & CanVec merged. .. as there is
a section about what is and is not included on GeoBase. ... So it looks like
(so far i see) that our Roads Import would be from GeoBase, and getting it
all in there, with a
"A string of 32 lowercase characters random based UUID (Universal unique
identifier) generated
without "-". Example: 69822b23d217494896014e57a2edb8ac"
So to have a point at each line segment, so then the roads can be a relation
which includes all the nodes. (ps. the 'mapping program to map the updates,
would record these UUID's and compare it with new ones, as they are
available). For OSM that is generated between updates, figuring out what
UUID's have been made, is only possable by guessing, and getting an estimate
where the program would look for a node close to it, and look at it to find
a simarilarity, if there is; it wouldn't be loaded, it there is not, then
stuff would get imported. (This method, puts the OSM data in priority over
imported CanVec) ... this is a technical challenge. .. but possable,
provided all the right CanVec tags get imported.
And about the Natural water/hydro features database, it looks there is the
argument about the updating frequency of it. so if the NHN is more accurate
on Geobase, then uploading the data direct from there would be better. (once
or twice a year, or as data becomes available.... Which one is better?)
As far as all the other features go, i see no reason why we cant use CanVec,
as alot of it is FROM geobase. .. the same source. So ... anyway, before i
ramble on anymore, i recommend we all need to sift through this PDF, as i
imagine this conversion program (we will create) CanVec2osm (as a python
script) can be made using all the code references from here. (rename of
GeoBase2osm) :)
An idea that might work, is starting with 1 tile as an example (i don't mind
the Tofino area :) .. as we can make a mess of it, running through the
script and seeing what gets caught. The city of Port Alberni is included in
that set (i think), so we have a wide range of features that will be shown.
This way, were not messing around in Vancouver or Toronto where its built
up already.
If the vote for grabbing the Road names as well as the water features direct
from CanVec can pass, then it would be a similar process??? ... why not do
it all in 1 go?
Do we have an agreement on having this stuff as a layer to trace with, or a
rendered map to trace with? ...(for built up areas)
or can we all agree to say 'hey, we have a new user who wants to load data,
there is a tonne of features and points all available. Odds are pritty good
that no one area in Canada has it ALL. So... is it worth the extra team
effort it will take to manually move the ghost lines over and/or go through
each way and move the all the GeoBase (sorry, CanVec) attributes, so that
for each road it shows all the CanVec reference attributes, as well as all
the OSM attributes???
In some cases it would be easier to move the CanVecID tags, and others it
would be easier to move the OSM ID tags. ... ie. cases where roads have many
relations attached to it, it would be best to copy the CanVec id over (so
not to risk loosing the custom OSM data) .... ?
At this point its hard to say just how many tags on each point we will have,
(Name/Type/Discription/RefID/RefSource/OSMuser/Tile area/import date/data
creation date/version#)
Anyway, the last point is that there are other canadian users out there who
are on this list, (who i havent heard from yet) ... i'll message them again,
as they might be able to help use more.
(... The ideal solution would to have the origional survayors & engineers
(who are making maps for the local area, jump onto OpenSteetMap, and make
the corrections directly) .. as we will have all the Land survey markers
already in OSM.... but that's wishful thinking on my part))
And a final thought, ya.. i'll be scanning the whole area along the whole
route of the Trans Canada Trail, and the extended (proposed) connections
along the Across Canada Trails, so i'll be (virtually) in each town, and
helping local mappers in fixing the data. :)
Cheers,
