If you experiment with the roadmatcher using data from OSM, be sure to reproject your datasets in projected coordinate system (LCC, utm). That way you will be able to use meters as tolerance values. Otherwise you have to use decimal degrees.

Thanks,
I hope Steve Singer would be able to help answer the question.
I'll just give my notes:
Maybe even tomorrow (thursday) i can have time in the library to try to explain on the white board what the problem is; and then try to explain what i mean when i say "copy / paste" from geobase.osm to data.osm
Where all the tags would remain in tact. ... a tedious process, but not any more tedious than tracing from your own GPS Tracks.
Does anyone know of a way to get a camera on my screen, so then when im talking people can see what is going on with my screen?
For me, i'm still a little 'daft or slow' as i cant figure out where to 'automatch' when i have OpenJump running, and have loaded both sets of files.
.. nor have i figured out how to convert the osm data to a SHP file. I need even more detailed instructions :-)
I imagine that the EXACT same process to convert the automatch results can be used for other shape files (just change the tags).
Cheers,
Sam

Hi all,
I did some test with the roadmatcher and wanted to give you some feedback. Although the tool has advanced features for the conflation of roads networks, the automatic matching function doesn't behave as expected when the two datasets have significant differences in terms of segmentation rules. As some of you might have realised, the geobase network has a lot more junction than the osm network. The roadmatcher tool seems to have trouble to find the different pieces of geobase segment that correspond to an OSM element. Fixing the resulting layer was a tedious task.
It might be possible though to tweak on the different tolerance values in order to improve the result.
Have some of you got good result with this tool? If so, what values did you use for the tolerances?
Right now, I'm working on a simpler solution using fme.

Hi all,
After doing 2 broadcasts, 1st being a test. Fortunately, some good feedback. For the 2nd broadcast, i used the white board, and was able to draw out and try to explain in picture-form what the problem is.
So now, for the next one, I will be able to further get into it, and try to hammer out all the objections, and hopefully it will be able to produce more ideas. :)
I haven't heard back yet from the latest ideas, as it looks like osm2shp is still in the works. as well as osm2csv.
I still need to earn what the capabilities are for RoadMatcher, as well as what the limits are to JOSM with looking at duplicates.
The only other application i know of which can successfully merge CSV files is GED.
GED From Ancestry.org project, where each entry has a unique ID number, however, there is smart matching where it links First/Last names and Birth/Death dates and relations / spouse/kids, to try to identify ancestors.
So it copies the information from 1 contact and adds them to another, then removes/merges duplicates. ... i'll try to contact to makers of that program, perhaps they have an idea.
Oh ya, for the contacts example, it looks like gmail will have the contact-sync soon. Perhaps its more difficult then i thought?
Cheers,
