[Talk-ca] Fwd: GeoBase vs CanVec

I wanted to be able to display the Ottawa street names in French so
needed to add a name:fr field in an automated way. The Ottawa streets
that weren't named or had Rd. etc. weren't so much of a problem, they
got cleaned up manually first but I came across more than a few that
were tagged with an incorrect name and I suspect there are still some
more lurking in there.

I think this is one of the difficulties with OSM how do you handle
existing data when something better comes along. What is the
objective, to create a reliable accurate map or create an historical
record of people's edits. I know I'm bias and it shows. At least I
can add my favourite coffee shops and there is no disputing their name
or where they are, just follow the gps trace.

I like the Geobase data import since it at least put the roads in the
correct place. Parts of Ottawa only had the low resolution satellite
data available and some of the roads were not as close as one might
like, which of course caused problems as the import process sought to
protect existing data.
