I asked the Land Registry about this when I was investigating the 
cadastral downloads. Apparently, parcels are never deleted or combined. 
A parcel can be split, if it is divided into two (or more) different 
registered titles, but multiple parcels within the same title are not 
combined or replaced.

In this particular location, if you look at it carefully, what you'll 
see is a whole bunch of seemingly orphan parcels that are now within the 
road. They represent the former extent of properties that were removed 
when the road was widened.

If you go to this URL, and then switch to the OS Roadmap layer and 
enable property boundaries, you can see that fairly clearly:

Compare those with the pre-widening building line as shown on the NLS 
map referenced previously, and you can see that they represent a set of 
now demolished buildings where the road now is. If you were to obtain 
the title register for those parcels (which isn't open data, 
unfortunately), you'd almost certainly find that they now all form part 
of the general title for the extent of the road.
