One subtle detail to consider is that the projection of the  path of the 
link onto the ground will be a great circle, so all but North South 
ones, or ones on the equator, should not be mapped as straight lines.  I 
think the deviation will be not entirely trivial at the resolution of 
the map, at mid latitudes.
