I found a company offering both gate posts and gate piers. The distinction
they seemed to be making was between one-piece and sectional pillars. I'm
not sure if that's the common distinction but, now I think about it, seems
to fit with the use of post in other circumstances. However, like Jerry I
wonder if it would be helpful to only use one at the top level.
