[Talk-nz] LINZ data import: South Island Pastoral Leases

Hi Rob,

The list of layers and the tagging used is documented here: http://wiki.osm.org/LINZ
The new layers are marked as “Ready to import”.

In most cases there is an approved and uncontroversial tag for each layer (e.g. gates, masts, streams, towers, fords, etc.).
Most of these are just continuations from the original LINZ import from 2009-2014.

When there isn’t an obvious tag, I’ve been emailing this mailing list, and sometimes also the ‘tagging’ mailing list.
The tricky layers are:

  *   pastoral leases
  *   water races (recently discussed on this mailing list)
  *   siphons (being discussed on the ‘tagging’ mailing list)
  *   fumaroles (tag proposal currently underway)

I haven’t emailed the imports mailing list about pastoral leases yet. Thought I’d check with talk-nz first.

Regarding conflation:
Apologies, there’s not much info on the wiki page about this... I’m still trying to figure out how we can continue the partially imported layers, like rivers and scree.
I will update the wiki page tonight to explain more about how the data is being conflated.

Definitely not landuse=farmland let's not further propagate it's incorrect usage.  As per https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:landuse%3Dfarmland that is for crops not grazing land which is what stations typically are.

Is this also being documented on the imports page somewhere with conflation strategies etc documented?  It also needs to be discussed on the imports mailing list.

I took a quick look on OSM at Te Anau, Napier, Auckland, Edgecumbe, and Christchurch where rural landuse is mapped, and it seems like landuse=farmland is used for any kind of farm, including pastures used purely for grazing.

So I’m not sure if we should use landuse=meadow (which describes the land-use better) or landuse=farmland (which is currently the more common tag)...

Hey Kyle,

That seems like a reasonable option to me. Looking at https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/farmland#values suggests little to no use of the farmland key. So I probably wouldn't bank on that being used by many.

I think the core tag is ref:linz:pastoral_lease_id. That will make it easy to query for and is somewhat descriptive.

Maybe a tag of landuse=meadow too? https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:landuse%3Dmeadow makes it sound like pasture is included as part of meadow. Then using "meadow<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:meadow>=pasture<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:meadow%3Dpasture&action=edit&redlink=1> a pasture for grazing livestock (not a hay meadow)." to indicate its use as pasture.
