Bah.  My version doesn't do that. :)

Please don't merge them any more.  A common node really means that they
share a point in space and that the point is navigable.  If you can turn
a train on to the street, then it's OK to share the node. :)

I'm not sure it helps with much.  It's just what I was asked to do long
ago. :)
