Hello,
In response to recent edits[1-3], I would like some help in determining the
proper road classification of RI-4 and its continuation on US-1 to
Charlestown, RI, specifically whether certain portions should be classified
as motorway rather than trunk. At question is the classification of:
1. US-1 for a 1/2 mile stretch at its interchange with RI-138
2. US-1 for a 2-mile stretch east and south of Wakefield
3. US-1 between Wakefield and Charlestown
See: https://osm.org/#map=14/41.5403/-71.4838 and pan south along the route
to see how it is presently tagged.
Route description:
RI-4 begins at a freeway interchange with Interstate 95 in West Warwick,
RI, and is built to Interstate standards until its intersection with a
traffic signal and at-grade intersection with Oak Hill Road in North
Kingstown.
>From Oak Hill road, for two miles, RI-4 is a divided, 4-lane road with
signalized at-grade intersections until its signalized at-grade merge with
US-1. Within a few hundred yards, US-1 has non-crossing at-grade
intersections with two residential streets (one on each side).
Immediately south of these residential streets, US-1 goes through a full
cloverleaf intersection with RI-138, built to Interstate standards (it was
part of a later-abandoned Interstate expansion).
For the next six miles, US-1 is a 4-line divided highway with signalized
intersections and one-side intersections with surface roads until it
approaches east of the village of Wakefield.
For the next 2.3 miles, US-1 returns to grade-separated interchanges as it
passes east and south of Wakefield.
For the final 11 miles, US-1 features at-grade tight merges and exits on
either side of the road, with frequent U-turn ramps in the wide median.
Traffic that needs to cross US-1 needs to merge onto the highway, U-turn at
the next median, and then take an off-ramp on the opposite side of the
highway. This stretch ends at a traffic light in Charlestown, after which
it continues as a surface road with at-grade crossing intersections.
