hello! i noticed your curiosity about our free map dorkbot talk and have decided to stick my oar in :)

here's the notes about Our Plan: http://twenteenthcentury.com/uo/index.php/LondonFreeMap

http://intevation.de/pipermail/freegis-list/2004-November/001950.html provides a bit more context as to "why, now"; for community wireless node basemaps, and for the London Open Guide, with a free locative services backplan.

we're starting out trying to do something very detailed and focused around limehouse; i had a lovely walk this lunchtime dodging joggers and making shapes of the basin and what's left of the Thames Path that's not colonised by warehouse-style modern living developments.

Schuyler wrote 80% of a GPX upload facility last week, and we have a PostGIS backend well worked out, but we've stalled on it while doing frantic lastminute copyedits to http://mappinghacks.com/ . This will be over in a day or two, though.

I know of at least 3 other people who are seriously interested in collaborating on a project like this and have existing code to contribute. Should i invite them onto this list, as whatever codebase we put together won't be london-specific, or would that irritate the existing inhabitants? Come to dorkbot, if you're around, and we can huddle in a pub afterwards?

p.s. our context: i've been based in london for a long time but spent a chunk of this last year hanging around in San Francisco with Schuyler and hacking on bits of tools like indymapper and geocoder.us . a combination of his outrage about eurodata unavailability, and my realisation of how much *is* possible with access to data bodies like TIGER/Line, has propelled us into working seriously on something i've only been dreaming about for years...
