If someone has a webserver with lots of disk space, and a copy of inkscape or 
rsvg installed, we can start upgrading the software used for my 
city-rendering page:

That might just have a list of cities, and go through a few cities per day 
downloading the area, rendering it, and putting the image, the SVG, and the 
OSM file on a web page.

This might be similar to Richard's "map library" idea if it were integrated 
into the openstreetmap front page.
