Could we do this on the dev Server?
If we need more diskspace on these machines we could thow some Euros/Pounds/..
togeter and by a new HDD.

Why downloading. If it is done on the dev Server we could use the weekly
planet.osm and use this with an pre areafilter. This would keep the db-server
load smaller.

This sounds like a really good Idea to me.

If it's one script which does all the rendering from the current planet.osm I
can host the resulting Maps/svng/jpg/png on my webserver too. Just in case
the Internet connection or HDD Space on the /Dev-Server is not enough.
