Right!...I shall reply to this one, as you went to some effert to explain
your points clearly. Appart from small things I would comment on at a
different time of night, the following are key things.

>but when roads are drawn larger to make them easier to see, you will get
>the
>following, because you have fixed the endpoints of the gate:

 > ------ ------
 > *
 > g
 > *
 >
 > ------ ------

Thats incorrect, as I have said, In taging the node in the center also the
gate would stretch to fit the bigger render. If a gate doesnt fall
adjacent to the road, (for instance there may be 1 on either side at the
same time wich would have to share a node, or just 1 that is off to one
side, the amount of programming required sounds like a lot. To shrink a
gate so its tiny across a tiny road would therefore not be really that
bigger task.

>>>But... as others have tried to say;

Wrong, I have been saying that. Quite the oposite has been said in
repsonce, excluding blackadders post.

Please check these 3 diagrams of an actual example. The amount of shering
pens is actualyl greater in reality, but this is sufficent for the example.

1) How I do it.
2) How it would be done if the nodes are gates.
3) Filling in the gaps, wich is incorrect as there isnt fence there, but so
that if a person renders them smaller than they are, the fence fills the
additonal area.

Notes.

1) Is super simle. Its clear for anyone to see without rendering, and while
editing. The red byway doesnt actually go adjacent to the gate as the image
sorter inplys but about 70'degrees to it. With this method mapping that
takes no longer and is very easy.
2) (Some of the black ones could be removed, I forgot to rub them out).
Much data would need to be taged to each node to state where the gate must
go. Errors in this would only be seen when rendering. This is very time
consuming, and a pain. If a gate renders smaller than the gap then there is
gaps in the fence wich are not there in reality.
3) The gaps are filled. and there is single nodes for the gates, with
tonnes of tags stating what they do and where they go. There is an increase
of nodes and segemnts, it is a pain to work with in josm, and slow to spot
flaws.

Note Note, This is forgeting the tracktype debate, but I don't really care
anymore.
