Yea... Would be cool. For JOSM, this has been requested before:
http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/236

An more academic problem is, that in Mercator projection, the y-axis is
not linear, so the same line on top of screen is less kilometers than on
bottom (in northern hemisphere).  (Academic, because it doesn't matter
much ;-)
