Some reading this list may be interested in furthering their mapping
knowledge by attending the Society of Cartographers Summer School. It is
an annual event and the 42nd is being held this September at Keele
University, UK. It a four day event - consisting of lectures, workshops,
visits and networking opportunities. OSM will be represented there by
Steve Coast and Nick Whitelegg, who are both giving presentations, and
Steve is running a workshop. Non-members of SoC may attend, and you may
also attend for parts of the conference. Full details are available at:
http://www.esci.keele.ac.uk/soc/index.html
Students and people from overseas (ie not UK) should note that bursaries
are available for full cost of attendance. Bursaries are only available
to student and overseas members of SoC, but this would make the joining
fee a very reasonable proposition. But act quickly as bursary
applications have to be lodged by 31 Jul. Colleagues may want to
consider joining anyway. Full details are available at:
http://www.soc.org.uk/
Whilst not being overtly political the SoC's aims are: "......to support
the practising cartographer and encourage and maintain a high standard
of cartographic illustration by providing information and opportunities
to meet and exchange views and techniques with fellow practising
cartographers."
Last year's event hosted a debate on Public Access to Digital Data -
with contributions from (among others) Ed Parsons, Jo Walsh, Steve Coast
and Richard Fairhurst. Their contributions are available at:

I hope that I might get to meet some of you at Keele. You will be warmly
welcomed.
Any queries please contact me.

Cheers
STEVE
