I don't know what this has to do with the privaccy policy as it stands,
I think it's a related but different issue.
I'm trying to deal with the first conspiracy of me holding all the data
by releasing it. Before doing so, I think people who uploaded personal
data under an absent or vague idea of what would be done with it should
be given the chance to opt out.
Anonymity means large technical, social and policy changes that will
take time and delay the policy.
The weight of opinion appears to be against prioritising anonymous
accounts right now. Like a number of issues, data should be weighed too.
What protects the project better legally? I have no idea, IANAL. I think
these big questions should come down to legal advice not what steve or
imi thinks is a great idea.
I propose that we settle a larger problem of how we decide these issues,
because we have some big things that are going back and forth. Given my
recent perceived plots to take over OSM we should transition to some
state where the OSMF decides, by a vote of its members.
How about this: A proposal which gains n% of OSMF members signatures
will be put to a vote of the OSMF full membership. It would require x%
to be passed.
We can debate what n and x should be, but with a framework like that we
have a mechanism to resolve some of the recurring discussions we have
on the list. Power to the people.
I'm aware that many people couldn't care less about the OSMF and just
want things to get done, and this will slow things down. I hear you. But
this is the OSMF which has to be more than a shell to legitimise me.
Unlike a year or so ago there are now big opponents of my decisions and
I'm being second guessed as to my dark motives. Ignoring this is
probably a bad idea even if it legitimises some of the fantasy. So far,
distributing authority has meant nothing but pain but I still think it's
the right thing to do.
If anyone has better ideas as to how we resolve these things, please
speak up :-)
have fun,
