I would just create a new way with the name on it, but I'm lazy. But
if you want to do it and there is a lot of segments, then JOSM allows
you to remove tags on lots of segments an an easy manner.

I can't give an definite answer to  the name question, I don't like
any of the solutions that are available.. The most logic one is to
create a separate way for each name, this works for me, but I don't
like it.

Join how do you meen? Ways are independent of each other, so you can
let lots of Ways share the same segment.
