Or use the tool at 
 http:://svn.openstreetmap.org/utils/planet-mirror/planet-mirror.pl
for downloading. It will get the newest planet.osm and sanitize it. The 
sanitized result is in
  ~/osm/planet/planet-061112-a.osm.bz2
