NASA SRTM - freely available. See README.CONTOURS in the freemap directory in 
the SVN archive at http://trac.openstreetmap.org.

It's unprojected. Seeing as it's not slippy, it should be easy to put a 
Mercator projection of sorts in.

I changed the rendering code slightly recently... will investigate what's 
causing this.
