Thanks for the replies. Based on the consensus, what I'll probably do is allow 
people to contribute (relatively brief, a paragraph or so) notes to add to 
the "description" tag in OSM, then, depending on exactly what sort of feature 
it is, provide a link to the Wikipedia article, or, for points of interest of 
ways for which Wikipedia wouldn't be appropriate, provide a link to a custom 
database. What would be good, for instance, is to allow users to click on a 
footpath and get full details on its state (muddy, etc).

While we're at it, incidentally, did we ever agree a "Wikipedia article" tag? 
e.g. if I click on Bath (the city) I'd want to be taken to the wikipedia 
article on the city and not on washing tubs!
