Well I am new here so tell me to keep quiet if this is not useful.

I have just been looking at the server performance
stats,http://www.openstreetmap.org/munin/openstreetmap/dev.openstreetmap.html
(I assume I have the correct server)
Of the cpu usage at 100% this is mostly iowait, which suggests to me any
mysql processing overhead is not critical.
The memory usage is also 100% with swap in use. So it looks like the
fastest improvement would be more ram and turn off swap. This involves
money and physical access to the server, I do not if these are problems.

I also wonder why the data in and the data out look to be about the same?
