Put a call out to SoC's carto-soc mailing list and had a bunch of
responses, which are aggregated (some editing) below:
-----------------
... use and like http://rippedsheets.com/ (USA). They have waterproof
and water resistant papers that I print on with my color laser
printer...
-----------------
.. a material called Polyart, which is plasticated. This was sourced for
us from France by Victoria Litho (UK) ... Chris Latcham ...02085815151
-----------------
Aqualaser from Aquascribe (http://www.aquascribe.com/ UK) to print maps
and log sheets for use in the field by local river fisheries boards and
anglers. It can be laser printed and also handwritten on in ballpoint or
pencil. Main disadvantage is it's very off-white, almost buff. Very
durable.
There aren't many suitable for inkjet, though National Geographic
'Adventure Paper' is one.
There's a whole website of waterproof paper products at
http://www.waterproof-paper.com/, but it's US-based.
Epson also does a waterproof colour laser print paper that they claim
has strength, durability and water resistance similar to plastic film,
and say even after a week in water this paper can maintain almost same
printing image and shape. It's Epson part number: 13S041978
Epson also do a coated Tyvek, but while it's undoubtedly strong when
wet, I'm not sure how waterproof it is in terms of ink run - that's an
important distinction if you are considering inkjet printing. Laser
print while inherently waterproof sometimes has adhesion problems on
waterproof substrates. Litho print is pretty good on all counts as long
as you have a printer who will handle it. It's available in A1 rolls,
part no S041494
-----------------
Harveys and Stirling Survays both print on Pretext - we've also used it
for the 'waterproof' version of the Sheffield Cycle Map
http://www.neenah-lahnstein.de/en/produkte/pretex_printmedien.asp
It is available in this country (UK), but appears to be 'special order
only' by most paper merchants - which means large-volume orders.
Many printers don't seem to like printing on it; we've used Arkle Print
successfully: http://www.arkleprint.co.uk/company/company.html
-----------------
My experience with HP's Tyvek is that there was an unacceptable amount
of ink run. Haven't tried Epson's.
-----------------
There may be further responses, but thought I would send those on for
now.
Cheers

Subject: [OSM-talk] wet strength map paper
Hello,
this might be slightly off-topic regarding our effort for OSM, but I
need wet strength map paper.
So, is anyone on the list once was looking after such kind of material?
