I reckon we have nearly 870 unique names, of which 730 are street names, and the rest are pubs, churches, parks, tourist attractions, place names and other POIs (roughly in that order). As a rough estimate I think the A-Z index for Bath has roughly 1500 names listed in it (although I avoid looking at that too closely). I think a big chunk of the difference is all those building names that Bath has, that OSM has no way of tagging yet.

I've been experimenting with a "building=" tag which I think may be worth putting into a formal Map Feature proposal. I've used it mostly on nodes but also on linear ways (building=terrace) and areal ways for mapping out the bounds of large buildings. So far I've been using building=house, farm, clubhouse, terrace.
