Yes I can equivalence one character for several. The Danish Å character is
equivalent to Aa even in Danish (the city is mapped as Århus but its rail
station as Aarhus if you look), and ß to ss in German. But with
diacriticals, I felt it was more likely people would type straight accented
characters simply without their accents, and I suspect the possible
equivalents may differ for different languages.
I'll think about ways of doing this both ways (I already do something like
that for Road and Rd etc.)
