If I remember correctly the gpsbabel filter can also take a count option
to reduce the number of points to a specific number while still
minimising the mean error. How about making a click of the simplify
reduce the number of points by some factor (perhaps 50%). Multiple
clicks can then be used to simplify the way further until the desired
result is achieved (this seems to be more intuitive than setting some
mean error number).

The result from this probably is not quite as optimal as doing a single
simplify though since the error is calculated from a smaller number of
points each time instead of from the original track.
