Good idea on promoting the featured images directly.  The discussion page is 
useful if you want people to check an idea (like failing to notice that a map 
is out-of-date... [1]) but we can do that for images in the [[Featured 
Images]] queue as well.

Do we want to keep doing featured images?  Apparently it's not so important 
now we have a usable slippy-map, although historically the featured images 
have also shown:
* rendering tests and proposed projects (e.g. arabic maps, relief maps)
* screenshots of websites (nestoria, cycle map, freemap) not available from 
OSM site
* screenshots of OSM on mobile devices
* videos (breathing map, party render)
* and the occasional photo

If you think it's still a cool idea, then I need some help finding images.   
Add them to featured or proposed-featured depending how sure you are. (even 
if you only upload them to the wiki, someone will see them in 'recent 
uploads' [2]).  

If you don't upload anything interesting, we just get screenshots of mapnik, 
which as CS says, is a bit boring.

p.s. if I don't change the front-page image by the end of any saturday, could 
someone make sure that it's done?  Instructions are on the bottom of 
[[featured images]] page.
