[OSM-talk] komoot wiki on OSM

Hi Paul,

Thanks for following up!

I may have given the wrong impression here by referring to Google
streetview. We do not use other sources to contribute to OSM, rather we use
them to try to find supporting (or opposing, as the case may be) evidence
that backs up an edit request we get from landowners or organisations who
contact komoot. What that means in practice are things like: If someone
claims a path doesn't exist and should be removed on OSM but we can clearly
see one on Google, we know that we can't take that at face value. If
someone claims a path is in a protected area but that isn't included up in
the official state maps of nature conservation areas, we know that they
aren't being completely upfront. We try to somehow prove or backup the
requests we get by looking at other sources of available information, since
we can't visit every path that gets reported to us. If we have any reason
at all to doubt the report, we say we don't have sufficient proof to edit
anything.

We only direct a small proportion of cases to the Data Working Group and
those are indeed in the case of disputes. We started doing this based on
feedback from members of the Data Working Group, where they explicitly
asked us to do so. So far, we haven't received any comments that suggest
that we're handling this wrong but we're happy to change our process here,
if that is the case.
