Another interesting questions is how this all works out looking into the future?

What happens if the OpenStreetMap database has grown to e.g. 5x its current size? Will the current implementation still outperform the "lossy way-node index" implementation, or is some break-even point expected, where the "lossy way-node index" implementation will in fact outperform the current implementation?

If the latter, than switching to the new implementation may be prudent and forward looking.
