In your defence Blake, the subject of this thread does read "Surveys (was:
Gender in OSM/OSMF)"

I'd like to think that I am not further derailing the thread because I
think the comment by both Frederik and yourself is a relevant one (surveys
are hard), also I hope the OSMF will follow up on your suggestion of
enquiring with Statistics Without Borders.
